The Dropshot Women’s Pro Tennis Open crowned its doubles champions Friday as No. 4 seeds Kylie Collins and Ella McDonald defeated Ashley Lahey and Alexandra Vagramov 6-0, 6-1 in a dominant 52-minute championship match.
Ella McDonald now has her sights set on a second title in Austin. The LSU standout began her week in singles qualifying and has put together an impressive run, defeating No. 6 seed Iryna Shymanovich in the opening round of the main draw before advancing past Rose Marie Nijkamp and Rebecca Munk Mortensen. In Friday’s semifinals, McDonald defeated Anastasia Tikhonova 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to reach the singles championship. Having secured spots in both finals and already claimed the doubles crown alongside Collins, McDonald is now one victory away from taking home both titles in Austin.
Friday’s singles semifinals featured two three-set battles. On one side of the draw, No. 5 seed Madison Brengle defeated No. 8 seed Elizabeth Mandlik 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 in an all-American matchup between two players who have reached the world’s top 100 during their careers. On the other, McDonald overcame Tikhonova in three sets to continue her qualifier-to-finalist run.
The singles championship is now set between Madison Brengle and Ella McDonald. Brengle, a former world No. 35, brings years of professional experience to the final, while McDonald looks to complete a remarkable week with a second championship at Courtyard Racquet Club.
